Gautam Gambhir has been appointed as the new Indian cricket team head coach, taking over from Rahul Dravid until December 2027.Jay Shah, BCCI Secretary and Twitter user, confirmed Gambhir’s appointment. He applauded him for having “clear vision for Team India”.
On July 27 he is due to take charge of India ahead of their three-match limited-overs series against Sri Lanka in three limited overs matches. Prior to that he led Kolkata Knight Riders to two Indian Premier League (IPL) championships (2012 and 2014).

Gautam Gambhir was announced as the new coach of India cricket team today, replacing Rahul Dravid. Gambhir emerged as a frontrunner after declaring his interest in coaching their national team back in May, saying there would be “no bigger honor” than representing millions around the globe and representing all 140 crore Indians as coach of their national side. Gambhir states he wants nothing else but service for his nation: “There would not be anything greater.”
Jay Shah, Secretary for Cricket Control in India (BCCI), confirmed Gambhir’s appointment via his official X account on Tuesday and noted his experience as a former batsman and clear vision for team performance as ideal qualifications for his position.shah was full of praise for Dravid, noting how his tenure culminated with India winning the T20 World Cup and expressed hope that Gambhir will build on this triumphant achievement.
Gambhir made headlines worldwide after retiring from all forms of cricket at 42 in 2019 and later dabbling in politics, becoming a lawmaker for PM Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party. Additionally, he worked as TV commentator and mentor to IPL franchises including Kolkata Knight Riders which won two titles with him between 2012 and 2014. A native of Delhi who loves Bollywood films, Gambhir was outspoken against a Supreme Court ruling mandating audiences stand when national anthems were played when film screened in cinema halls.

After Rahul Dravid announced he wouldn’t apply to renew his tenure as India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir has emerged as the frontrunner to fill his shoes. Gambhir, 42-years-old who scored an important 97 in the 2011 T20 World Cup final and interviewed by both former women’s coach WV Raman and Cricket Advisory Committee member WV Raman is expected to have full autonomy when selecting his support staff for national team job.
Though Gambhir does not possess international coaching experience yet, his work as mentor for IPL franchises — KKR and Lucknow Super Giants – have convinced the top brass that he is up for this new challenge. Recently filmed his farewell video with KKR, his first tour as national coach will likely begin during an upcoming white-ball tour to Sri Lanka.

Gambhir brings tremendous experience as both a player and administrator to India’s white-ball side, having won two World Cups himself as a batsman. Following India’s thrilling T20 World Cup triumph and increased expectations, he takes over leadership of their national side after replacing Rahul Dravid who chose not to continue in his role. Gambhir will supervise India’s tour of Sri Lanka shortly thereafter – India’s inaugural limited-overs assignment since winning T20 World Cup.
Later this month, Gambhir will start his tenure as India coach when the Men in Blue tour Sri Lanka for three T20Is and three ODIs. Jay Shah of BCCI announced Gambhir’s appointment as coach on Tuesday.
Gambhir was an outstanding opener for India across all formats of cricket during his playing career, becoming particularly iconic with his 97-run knock in the 2011 ODI World Cup Final against MS Dhoni’s side to help secure their second world crown and remain one of the greatest innings ever seen in Indian cricket history. Furthermore, as former India batsman he will prove invaluable as an advisor and strategist on team India.

Rahul Dravid has officially handed the reins over to Gautam Gambhir as Indian cricket enters a new era. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed this change via their app X, informing team India players and staff alike that Gautam Gambhir will take charge as head coach from July. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah announced Gambhir’s appointment saying that he has full faith in his ability to guide Team India forward.
Gambhir was widely expected to replace Dravid, since he decided not to apply for another term in May. Interviews by the Cricket Advisory Committee took place with both him and WV Raman; Gambhir may even have received his promise long before applications were called for in May.
He will take over a team that is currently competing in the ICC T20 World Cup in Barbados and must fill a significant void as India looks for their first major T20 title since 2013. His tenure will commence with India’s white-ball tour of Sri Lanka this month – three ODIs and three T20Is will take place.
