May sales defied industry-wide passenger car sales declines thanks to higher penetration of electric two-wheelers (e-2Ws) from market leaders like Ola Electric, TVS Motor Company and Bajaj Auto.

An assortment of factors inhibiting growth contributed to lower-than-expected sales for electric two-wheelers in May 2024, including lower volumes from top-selling OEMs such as Ola Electric, TVS Motor Company and Ather Energy.
Market leader Hero MotoCorp posted sales of 4,98,123 units last month compared to 5,19,474 in April 2024, showing a slight decline. Honda India has experienced 25 percent year-on-year growth and remains confident of reaching their annual targets for this fiscal. Their product line boasts 10 refreshed or all-new offerings – beginning with CB Unicorn 160cc set for launch this January.

Royal Enfield has long reigned supreme in the 300cc to 500cc motorcycle segment with their classic-styled offerings, and have continued this month by growing both YoY and MoM sales figures.
Domestic sales at Royal Enfield experienced an impressive 14% jump and exports posted a 13% expansion year-on-year. Royal Enfield CEO B Govindarajan believes his company can maintain this growth momentum; recently opening an East regional warehouse near Kolkata to speed up spare part delivery time; channel partners can also benefit from this development.
The company is set for an exciting launch season, introducing at least four products – Interceptor Bear 650, Classic 650 and Shotgun 350 bobber are slated to make their debuts in India as well as Guerrilla 450 scrambler.
Indian two-wheeler industry continues to flourish thanks to a surge in electric vehicle (EV) demand and resilient internal combustion engine (ICE) models. Hero MotoCorp and Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India sales have experienced double digit increases, with TVS Motor Company and Bajaj Auto both showing notable gains.

May is typically a slower month for sales in the two-wheeler industry, with momentum expected to increase after monsoon season. However, election-related activity and low marriage season figures may have had an impactful slowdown.
Bajaj Auto reported sales of 3,55,323 units last month – steady on both an annual and month-over-month basis but down slightly month over month. Domestic scooter sales experienced growth of 8 and 6 percent respectively while exports saw 18 percent year-on-year expansion.
Bajaj Auto’s export sales have had an impressive start to this fiscal year, surpassing half-a-million units exported between January and April 2024, placing them as market leader for that market segment. Meanwhile, its EV business continues to advance, as Vida recorded sales of 2,453 units – its second-best monthly performance ever after reaching record sales levels in April. Meanwhile River Mobility recorded sales of 1,261 units.
