Kohli’s 76-ball 76 was an emotional farewell for an amazing batsman whose magic with the bat had faded last year, yet saved India against South Africa in this high-octane thriller. Not only did it end a 12-year wait for an ICC World Cup championship but he also brought joy and tears of happiness from millions of Indians worldwide. Kohli remains one of the game’s premier batsmen today.
After a delayed open-top bus victory parade from Mumbai airport, Kohli and his team arrived at Wankhede Stadium late Thursday evening to a fantastic welcome party. Over three lakh fans turned out on Marine Drive to give Virat Kohli and team an unforgettable welcome home experience, singing “Virat Kohli, You are the King of Mumbai!” and dancing Chak de India along the way.
Kohli could be seen hugging coach Rahul Dravid before taking in the moment by taking a selfie with wife Anushka Sharma and children. As his Range Rover weaved through Mumbai traffic, Kohli observed people walking by with briefcases and backpacks, trying to make ends meet. They huddled under umbrellas as they raced toward train and bus stations or fought their way through crowds for daily doses of chai or bagel – similar to how millions lined up to celebrate Kohli and his incredible run scoring ability – currently on his 49th ODI hundred since Tendulkar first rose to greatness! The whole world witnessed his skill and exuberant spirit!
Kohli has made his mark in India where fame is an unavoidable reality. Fame can either be used as an anchor or leverage point; Yuvraj Singh found it too much to bear and suffered because of it; others such as Kohli and Rohit Sharma took advantage of it by building careers around it while using its many aspects to motivate themselves to perform at higher levels.
Both Rohit and Kohli have endured their share of ups and downs; they represent two faces of India at this momentous juncture in its development. While their voices often coincide in dejection and triumph, ultimately each has created his or her own niche; Rohit may be quieter than Kohli but his unwavering pursuit of excellence remains his trademark trait.
