Jeff Plake was surprised but pleased to learn of Johnson’s promotion as first lieutenant of the United States Army ROTC Bear Batallion at Evangel University of Missouri a few days prior to his passing. Following impressive domestic cricket performances for Karnataka state cricket team he earned himself an international Test call-up and made his Test debut three wickets earlier than planned in 1996.
But he struggled to replicate that success at international cricket’s highest levels; only appearing in two Test matches and taking three wickets during those outings.
